Every autumn, Cheonan hosts a Multicultural Festival where people can experience and enjoy the diverse cultures of different countries in one place. Among the many activities at the festival, the international food booths are always a special attraction, giving visitors the opportunity to taste foods from different cultures and learn more about the people and traditions behind them.
The Philippine food booth at the Cheonan Multicultural Family Support Center has become a meaningful part of this annual festival. More than simply introducing Filipino food, the booth provides an opportunity for Filipino marriage immigrants to come together, share their culture, and participate in making the festival a success.
Every year, different Filipino foods are prepared and offered to festival visitors as free samples. In the past, Buko Salad, a popular Filipino dessert made with coconut and various fruits, was introduced. In 2025, the booth featured Pansit, a well-loved Filipino noodle dish, and Puto Cheese, a traditional Filipino steamed rice cake topped with cheese.
Visitors had the chance to taste Filipino food that they may not normally encounter in their everyday lives. Filipino volunteers also introduced the names and characteristics of the dishes, allowing visitors to learn more about Filipino food culture while enjoying the flavors.
The food is not the only thing that makes the Philippine booth special. Each year, the volunteers also put great effort into decorating the booth to create the atmosphere of a Filipino barrio fiesta. Colorful decorations and Filipino-themed displays help create a lively and welcoming space where visitors can experience a little taste of the Philippines.
Behind the successful operation of the booth are the many Filipino marriage immigrants who willingly volunteer their time and energy. As the festival approaches, they gather together to discuss the menu, prepare ingredients, cook the food, decorate the booth, and organize activities for visitors.
Although everyone has their own family, work, and daily responsibilities, many volunteers make time to participate. Some help prepare the food, others decorate the booth, while others welcome visitors and explain the dishes. By sharing their individual talents and helping one another, they create a warm and welcoming Filipino space at the festival.
For Filipino marriage immigrants, the Multicultural Festival is also a meaningful opportunity to introduce their homeland and culture to the local community. Preparing and sharing familiar Filipino food can bring back memories of home while also giving them an opportunity to connect with other Filipinos living in Korea.
Food can be more than something we eat. It can carry memories, traditions, and stories. At the Multicultural Festival, sharing Filipino food becomes a simple but meaningful way to bring people from different backgrounds closer together.
This year, the Philippine food booth is once again preparing something new for the 2026 Multicultural Festival. The Filipino volunteers are working together to prepare new foods and create another colorful and welcoming booth for visitors.
Every autumn, the Philippine food booth continues to bring people together through food, culture, and volunteerism. With the dedication and teamwork of Filipino marriage immigrants, the booth has become more than just a place to taste Filipino food—it has become a place where cultures meet, friendships grow, and the spirit of community is shared.
This year, we look forward to welcoming visitors once again and sharing a little taste of the Philippines with the people of Cheonan.
